Brazilian voice actors join forces to fight the threat of AI: understand the movement.

Movement led by United Voice Artists seeks regulation to protect voice actors from being replaced by artificial intelligence.

Brazilian voice actors are joining forces in a movement led by United Voice Artists to demand regulation of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in audiovisual productions. Professionals fear that AI could replace human voice actors, imitating voices based on patterns identified on the internet. The group's petition has already exceeded 50,000 signatures, highlighting concerns about job losses and the quality of voiceovers.

The discussion about the limits of AI in audiovisual productions is not exclusive to Brazil and was one of the main causes of a historic actors' strike in Hollywood last year, which lasted almost four months. In Brazil, the Dublagem Viva movement seeks to establish rules that balance technological advances with preserving jobs and guaranteeing the quality of dubbing.

Marcelo Mattoso, a partner at Barcellos Tucunduva Advogados and a specialist in the games and eSports market, proposes drafting a bill to regulate the discussion. The central idea is not to ban the use of AI, but to guarantee the quality of dubbing, says Mattoso. The bill could address issues such as banning the use of AI to replicate voices, its use in compliance with copyright law and the prohibition of stereotyped or discriminatory content.

Surveys show that 80% of Brazilians prefer the Portuguese version of audiovisual productions. However, without a law regulating the use of AI, voice actors run the risk of being replaced. Marcelo Mattoso warns that, without regulation, studios can choose to use AI in dubbing, and the unpredictability of the market is real, since AI can simulate dubs close to the originals made by professionals.
