Brazil’s PIX has reached the historical mark of 99.4 million transactions in a single day

Last Wednesday (30), Brazil’s payment system PIX broke a new record: 99.4 million transactions in a single day. According to the country’s Central Bank (Banco Central do Brasil/BC), the previous milestone happened on October 7: 93.6 million operations.

On this 2nd anniversary, the immediate payment method has established itself as Brazil's preferred way of transferring money. The new record coincided with the final deadline for payment of the first installment of Brazil’s traditional 13th salary, informed the BC.

To Giancarllo Melito – a lawyer specialized in Means of Payment and partner at Barcellos Tucunduva Advogados (BTLAW) –, payment of the extra salary benefit has contributed to this result, since PIX is very practical.

“Without prejudice to the increasing number of transactions using PIX, payment transactions are more frequent when people have more money. Moreover, since PIX is one of Brazilian people’s preferred means of payment, this kind of transaction will tend to increase even more,” he says.

A new record this year

Giancarllo Melito also says that a new PIX record could be broken in December, because of Christmas. “Even people who are reluctant to use PIX tend to do so when they realize its benefits,” he adds.

Further increases in the use of PIX are expected. According the President of the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Federação Brasileira de Bancos/Febraban), Isaac Sidney, the data reveal that – in the last 12 months alone – a 94% increase in the use of PIX was registered.
